Meet Benjamin Nicol
About Benjamin Nicol
Melbourne-based graphic designer, creative and heavy metal fan Ben Nicol likes to think outside the box and make designs that stand out from the crowd.
What is your design specialty?
The ability to create professional and polished designs (that are aesthetically pleasing and exciting) but use unconventional colour styles.
Describe yourself in three words.
Enthusiastic, passionate and analytical.
If you could have a coffee with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
From a design perspective (New York-based graphic designer, storyteller, and typographer) Stefan Sagmeister, known for his work with the Rolling Stones and Time Warner. I admire his ability to think outside the box and design things that make people think and feel. I like creating work that challenges people as well.
If you weren’t working in graphic design, what do you think you would be doing?
I would love to do something in the creative field. I love writing, I love travel and I love photography; I would also love to be a travel blogger. Sweden would be first on my return-to list.
Who are some of your favourite clients you have worked with?
I really loved doing the re-brand for Howard Fine Acting Studio. It was all about modernising the brand and creating something that better reflected the company ideology. We did carry across elements of the old logo, like the colour blue.
What's playing through your speakers?
Heavy metal. I bought my first album when I was 13 (Metallica) and have been in to metal ever since. I previously worked as a graphic designer for a music magazine, so I have been in and around music for many years.
Why do you love design?
I find it really stimulates both sides of my personality; creative and analytical. I also enjoy the psychology of it. I love thinking about how I can best communicate something to an audience, and how it may be perceived.
