New online design marketplace to boost Australian graphic design industry

An Australian owned and operated online start-up, which links Australian businesses with Australian-based graphic designers, is aiming to shake up the contest-based design platform market.

TheDesignLab Founder and Managing Director Adam Power said the marketplace, which launched last month with 12 foundation designers, would support the graphic design industry in Australia, increase the marketability of young design talent and enable small businesses to access to affordable branding from leading Australian graphic designers.

“In recent years, the emergence and popularity of design contest marketplaces worldwide has given rise to hundreds of thousands of amateur and unqualified designers which have devalued the graphic arts industry and pushed Australian business off-shore.”

Mr. Power said.
“TheDesignLab is aiming to change that. While we welcome the contest platform model as a popular choice for businesses seeking diverse design options and designers looking to build their portfolio, we do not support unpaid spec work, or the delivery of less than stellar design products to clients.

“All designers are Australian-based, hand-picked by us, tertiary qualified and have worked with some of Australia’s best and well-known brands.
“For designers, it offers the chance to earn some serious dollars on the side, have complete working flexibility and build and maintain a solid customer base.

“For Australian businesses, it offers access to branding like a logo, business cards, website or merchandise by industry-leading designers at an affordable rate.

“It will also enable larger companies to access to a roster of ready-to-use designers.”

Mr. Power  said the response to TheDesignLab to date, from designers, businesses and the public had been very positive.

“For us, it’s about supporting some of the 22,000 Australians employed as graphic designers in Australia through those ‘quieter’ periods, the 2000 graphic design graduates that enter the Australian market each year, and the 2.1 million small businesses in Australia (noting 55,000 businesses fail each year),” he said. “We believe we can value-add to a number of industries, through the delivery of this platform.

“Branding is so important to the visual identity of a business or product, and how it is perceived or received. It can be the difference between make or break.”

Mr. Power said TheDesignLab would continue to increase its number of rostered designers as the company grew.
